Managing Anxiety in Uncertain Times

In the past decade alone, an estimated 275 million people have suffered from anxiety and related anxiety disorders. Countless others experience acute or situational anxiety in response to specific events and occurrences they face. Needless to say, over the past few months, almost all of us have experienced our fair share of anxiety.
Between a global pandemic, social and political unrest, and a rapidly changing economy, it seems there’s little we can be certain about. Anxiety thrives on uncertainty, escalating and altering thoughts about the future as our minds explore every possible outcome.
But while there is little within our control right now, our minds are among them. We have the option to turn our anxious thoughts into ones that are calm and even productive. Below are a few methods to help you manage anxiety during this uncertain time.
Create a routine for yourself
Schools and workplaces closing have likely disrupted your typical routine, and while sleeping late and not following a schedule may have felt good for a while, it’s likely to also come with a host of anxious thoughts and feelings. By creating even a loose daily routine for yourself, you’ll have a comforting framework that gives you consistency amidst uncertain times and ensures that you continue to meet goals for work, school, or personal projects.
Pick up some healthy habits
While you’re creating your routine, schedule in some time to journal, meditate, or exercise. These activities can help keep your mind and body healthy and further add consistency where it may be lacking. Connect
While meeting with friends and family in person may still not be an option in some areas, we are lucky to live in a technology-rich world that makes family and friends just a click away. So schedule a Facetime call or Zoom party to connect easily and safely with those you love.
Limit your social media and news exposure
With all this extra time on your hands, you might find yourself scrolling mindlessly for hours on end, or keeping the news on constantly in the background. This unrelenting exposure to negativity can increase anxiety levels and lead to depression. Place a daily limit for your consumption of both the news and social media, and spend the extra time on one of the other items on this list.
Get some fresh air
If you can do so safely where you live, a short walk or run outside, or even just sitting on the porch for a few minutes, can turn your mood around and invigorate your mind and body. That’s not to mention the fact that Vitamin D absorbed from the sun can be incredibly good for both mental and physical health.
Don’t overdo the caffeine
Working at home in PJ’s might leave you reaching for another cup of coffee (and another, and another) throughout the day, but that can really work against you. Excess caffeine is highly correlated with anxiety and panic attacks. Opt instead for matcha if you’d like some caffeine, as it contains a smaller amount, and one that is more slowly dispersed throughout the system. Enjoy the boost without the jitters!
