How Your Skincare Products May Be Sabotaging Your Health

When you purchase skincare products, you’re searching for something to keep you looking youthful, vibrant, and healthy for years to come. You want something that makes your skin bright, even, and beautiful.
But did you know that by using some of the most popular skincare products on the market, you could be causing your body more harm than good? Many common ingredients in skincare are unregulated compounds that can be harmful to the human body. Just take a look at the ingredients list on your concealer, nail polish, toothpaste, or face wash. In all likelihood, you can’t pronounce and have never heard of most of them.
While you may assume that these ingredients have been tested and deemed safe for use, the reality is that few are ever examined for the safety of long-term use, and often only after a user has complained about side effects.
If you’re reading this, you’re likely interested in maintaining or improving your health. You probably put a good deal of thought into the food ingredients you consume on a daily basis because you know those ingredients are entering your body and influencing your health. But the same is true for anything you put on your body, whether it goes in your hair, on your nails, or on your skin.
The skin, in particular, is the largest organ in the body and certainly has the most surface area. That means that anything applied to the skin has great odds of entering the body, and, depending on its contents, disrupting systems. Many of the common active ingredients in cosmetics have suspected links to hormonal disruption, infertility, and even cancer.
You can avoid the dangers of conventional cosmetics with the following approaches:
Do your research. Take a look at the ingredients on the bottle and look into any you haven’t heard of. Be especially cognizant of the “Dirty Dozen.” According to David Suzuki, these twelve chemicals are among the most common and harmful ingredients to steer clear of in your beauty products, and they include:
BHA and BHT
Coal Tar Dyes
DEA-related ingredients
Dibutyl Phthalate
DEA-related ingredients
Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
Parabens
Parfum
PEG Compounds
Petrolatum
Siloxanes
Sodium Laureth Sulfate
Triclosan
Look for safer alternatives. You don’t have to abandon beauty products altogether. There are plenty of responsibly made and tested items for sale if you take the time to look for them. Opt for fewer ingredients over more and try to find those available in sustainable packaging.
Don’t take product claims at face value. Look into ingredients yourself rather than settling for something that claims to be all-natural or paraben-free, as companies often switch out chemicals known to be problematic with others that may be just as unsafe, but are not yet well-known.
Simplify. The average American woman uses more than 15 different beauty products on a daily basis. By paring down your cosmetics to a few quality products, you’ll be better serving your health, your wallet, and your bathroom storage space. Oftentimes, just a few well-made products are all you really need to get the best results.
